Counterfeit
Souls

The story behind the poster. A white suit, a white lion, a gold throne — and a line Papa G has been known to say when the devil comes collecting.

01 · The line

I hope
the devil
doesn't figure
out I've been
selling him
counterfeit
souls.

— Papa G, On The Journey

This is not a joke about hell. It is a manifesto about what you refuse to sell.

Every era has a version of the same bargain: give me the real thing and I'll give you the world. Status. Comfort. A seat at a table that was never yours. The marketplace will take whatever you put on the counter — your name, your mornings, the way you walk into a room.

Papa G's answer is the oldest kind of defiance. Sit like a king. Dress like the mountain should be concerned. And if the devil comes collecting, hand him a fake.

The soul on offer in the marketplace — the one that performs, complies, dresses for success instead of for moving people — that is the counterfeit. The original stays in the chair.

02 · The seat

Anatomy of the poster

Nothing in the frame is accidental. The picture is a court portrait disguised as a threat, and every object in it is doing work.

  1. 01

    The throne

Not a rented set. A claim. Gold that has been sat in, ivory tufting, a crown carved into the crest. The posture of a man who already decided the room belongs to him — one ankle crossed, both arms down, no one to impress.

  2. 02

    The watcher

White. Not roaring. Watching. A sentinel, not a mascot. The same animal stands behind him as the Ace of Spades and walks the marble hall as the Ace of Hearts. In this house the lion is the house.

  3. 03

    The white suit

Total. No apology color. Sunglasses indoors. The watch. The shoes. From brains to britches, every inch is a decision. He doesn't dress for success. He dresses so the mountain is concerned.

  4. 04

    The type

Condensed, stacked, gold fading into fire. Devil in blood. Souls in flame. Those are the only two words that get to burn. Everything else is a warning issued in a calm voice.

  5. 05

    The mark

03 · The man

He doesn't dress for success. He dresses to move souls.

Papa G is front and center. He commands quality attire. He knows that when you feel good, you do good. To Papa G, clothing is more than whatever happens to be clean in the morning. Total fashion outfits a human from brains to britches.

He wears ideas like outfits and accessorises for function. When it comes to firearms, Papa believes you need a holster for every outfit. He puts on his attitude with the same care — making sure it matches the ensemble.

That is the hinge of Counterfeit Souls. The devil is in the business of buying men who dressed for the room. Papa G dresses for the work: moving people. The original stays off the ledger.

If you're gonna move mountains, you need to dress so when that mountain sees you… it's concerned.

04 · The journey

He stayed on the outside.

Counterfeit Souls is not a one-off. It is a station on a longer road: the Papa G Chronicles, the playing-card court, the Sentinels & Guardians.

Ten years before the great flood he watched the waters rise. He stayed on the outside to cut the main rope that would seal the Great Gate. He was the last person to see Atlantis.

That is the lineage this poster sits in. Not costume. Continuity. The man who would not go through the gate is the same man who will not go through the deal. He cuts the rope. He keeps the original. He sells the devil a forgery and remains in the chair.

Papa G Chronicles

05 · The court

The same man. Four temperatures.

The Ace of Spades is this throne. The Ace of Hearts walks a palace in red. The Jack of Diamonds stands in linen above an ancient harbor. The Jack of Spades wears the armor of a city. One house. Four cards.

A♠

Ace of Spades

The same throne. The same lion. The highest card — played only when the table is already his.

A♥

Ace of Hearts

Red suit, marble palace, chandelier light. Same man. Different temperature.

J♦

Jack of Diamonds

Linen and gold on a cliff above an ancient harbor. Greek blood looking back at itself.

J♠

Jack of Spades

Ornate armor, a city of columns, a sword in the hand. Rome worn as a second skin.

06 · The table

Who sits. Who doesn't.

There is a sister print. Two women in a kitchen that could be 1954, tea on the table, a Papa G sign on the wall. One of them leans in with the kind of news that is really a verdict.

She said she'd see y'all in hell. The answer came back without a blink: she ain't sitting at our table.

Same house as the throne. Same rule as the poster. The counterfeit doesn't get a chair. Hell can keep its guest list. This table is spoken for.

07 · Collection

The house, on the wall.

Open any print. The poster is the keystone. Everything else is the court, the chronicle, and the table it keeps.
